Gary Hooper, Joe Ledley and captain Scott Brown are winning their battle to be fit for Tuesday's Champions League match against Benfica in Portugal.

Skipper Scott Brown (hip), Joe Ledley (groin), and striker Gary Hooper (hamstring) all travelled but the Hoops boss admits only two are certain to be in contention, although he refused to name which player is struggling.

Forward Georgios Samaras, who came off during the 2-0 Clydesdale Bank Premier League win against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Saturday with fatigue, and midfielder Kris Commons, who was substituted after suffering a dead leg, are both in the squad along with striker Miku, who missed the trip to the Granite City due to what Lennon described as a "small procedure."

Das erste von zwei Endspielen für unsere Mannschaft. Mit einem 1-1 und einer gleichzeitigen Niederlage von Spartak gegen Barcelona sind wir im Achtelfinale. Barca gewinnt, davon gehe ich aus. Verlieren wir, haben wir zu Hause gegn Spartak die zweite Chance uns für die letzten 16 zu qualifizieren, da wiederum Barca zu Hause nicht gegen Benfica verlieren wird. Am besten wir selbst machen morgen den Sack in Lissabon zu. Fakt ist, Spartak und Benfica haben morgen den grösseren Druck auf ihrere Seite.

Celtic could be boosted by a number of players returning to face Benfica in Lisbon on Tuesday evening.


Skipper Scott Brown, midfielder Joe Ledley, and leading scorer Gary Hooper are all in contention to return while Kris Commons should be available after being replaced during the weekend victory at Aberdeen. Otherwise, Emilio Izaguirre, Thomas Rogne and James Forrest remain sidelined.

The Scottish champions are currently second to Barcelona in the group but three points clear of their latest opponents with just two games remaining.

"Scott Brown and Gary Hooper are back in contention and Kris Commons and Georgios Samaras seem to be OK," assistant manager Johan Mjallby told BBC Scotland. "Joe Ledley and Miku are back in contention and we have to wait to see how they are tonight when we train."

Sollten Brown oder Ledley nicht spielen können rückt Commons ins Team, auch wenn ich seine Spielweise für solche Defensivschlachten, wie ich sie morgen erwarte, nicht unbedingt passend finde. Hooper würde ich morgen noch nicht bringen, wenn er noch nicht bei 100% ist. Ihn für dieses Spiel fit zu spritzen und damit dann eine chronische Verletzung zu riskieren wäre in meinen Augen ein zu hohes Risiko, zumal wir für seine Position genügend Alternativen haben. Ich würde Miku bringen, der kam in Europa bisher deutlich besser zurecht als in der SPL. Watt dann wieder irgendwann als Joker rein, und Lassad ist ja auch wieder ne Option...

Auch an solchen Aussagen merkt man, dass die Nerven der Portugiesen anscheinend wirklich blank liegen, die hätten mit der Möglichkeit eines Ausscheidens wohl wirklich nicht gerechnet. Ich erwarte durchaus ein hitziges Spiel, der Druck liegt jedenfalls eindeutig bei ihnen. Nur verückt machen lassen sollten wir uns nicht, denn schauspielern und fallen können sie wohl eindeutig besser als die Unsrigen...

Spiele gegen portugalesische Teams sind nie ein Zuckerchlecken. Viele kleine Fouls um Gegenangriffe zu stören und wenn sie gefoult werden (oder auch nicht) minutenlange Bodenturneinlagen.

Es läuft somit alles nach Plan. Wenn man sich das Result bisher mal anschaut haben wir uns ja super gegen Barca geschlagen. Egal wie das Spiel von uns heute endet, gegen Spartak machen wir den Einzug ins 1/8 Finale perfekt. EL sind wir nach dem heuiteigen Spieltag allerdings schon sicher vertreten.

Celtic will definitely be involved in European football after Christmas.

Barcelona’s 3-0 win away to Spartak Moscow ensures that the hoops will finish in third place at worse in Champions League Group G providing Neil Lennon’s side with a place in the Europa League.

A win or score draw tonight with Benfica will put Celtic into the last 16 of the Champions League.

Even a defeat in Lisbon will mean that Celtic are still in with a strong chance of qualifying for the knock-out phase of the Champions League with the final fixtures seeing Celtic entertain Spartak Moscow while Benfica go to the Nou Camp.

The result from Moscow was never in any doubt with Barca racing into a 3-0 lead thanks to a double from Lionel Messi following the 16th minute opener from Danni Alves.

With European football guarenteed in the new year Celtic have already out-performed their seeing which saw them placed in pot four when the Champions League draw was made.

The result from Moscow gives Celtic the possibility of two attempts at going through to the last 16 of the Champions League but Lennon is hoping that his players complete the task tonight.

The hoops boss said: “We might get two bites of the cherry but we would like to do it at the first time of asking.

“Benfica are formidable team at home and their domestic form is excellent, and they, like ourselves, go into the game on the back of a very good win.”
