Brown Lauds 'Phenomenal' Celtic Win at Spartak


Beating Spartak Moscow 3-2 away from home to seal Celtic's first win in 21 Champions League away games was "phenomenal" and prompted wild celebration among the Celtic players, captain Scott Brown said Tuesday.

Celtic came back from 2-1 down with 20 minutes remaining to win with an own goal and a last-gasp winner from Georgios Samaras.

"It's just phenomenal that we managed to go away from home and get three points in the group stage," Brown said.

"For us to be on the winning side and going into that dressing room with the music blaring and everyone jumping about, just delighted."

Confidence from beating Spartak could boost Celtic for their next two matches against Barcelona, Brown said.

"We've got great team spirit in the dressing room so we're going to have to take that onto the pitch," he said.

The turning point in Moscow came when Spartak center-back Juan Manuel Insaurralde was sent off for tripping Gary Hooper in a last-man challenge, but Brown suggested the referee had taken some persuading to issue the red.

"At the end, we managed to get the right decision," he said, claiming the referee had originally intended to book Hooper for diving.

"I think Gary was one-on-one with the goalie, he just managed to get in behind the defender and he's brought him down, so he's not going to dive from 10, 15 yards out [of the box]," Brown said.

Neil Lennon hails 'magnificent' Celtic after win in Moscow


Manager Neil Lennon said he was "probably the proudest man in Europe" after Celtic's 3-2 Champions League victory over 10-man Spartak Moscow.

"I cannot speak highly enough of the players, they were magnificent," enthused Lennon.

"They showed great character and fortitude to come back after going behind just after half-time.

"People underestimate Celtic. I don't think we get the respect we deserve but that might change a few attitudes."

Georgios Samaras' last-gasp header in the Luzhniki Stadium gave Celtic a first group phase away win in 19 attempts.

Gary Hooper had shot the visitors in front before Emmanuel Emenike hit back for the Russian club, with close-range goals either side of the interval.

Spartak defender Juan Insaurralde was sent off on 63 minutes for a cynical trip that prevented Hooper going clean through on goal.

And Celtic levelled 10 minutes later when a strike from substitute James Forrest rebounded in off Dmitri Kombarov.

"I thought we thoroughly deserved to win it," said Lennon.

"We didn't start particularly well, we looked a bit nervous and our passing wasn't there for the first five or 10 minutes but we had a quick break and scored a good goal.

"I have to say I thought Gary Hooper was world class tonight.

"I thought he was just magnificent and the catalyst for a lot of good things we did.

"People keep asking me about him playing for England, well I think he showed how good he is.

"But there were so many good performances, Izaguirre, Ambrose, Wilson, Brown, Samaras came on to a game, Commons got stronger as the game went on, James Forrest came on and gave us pace and quality."

Celtic have four points from two games but Lennon refused to get carried away with regards their chances of qualifying for the knock-out stages.

"We just have to play Barcelona home and away," he jested. "It is a huge step for the club.

"It is our first away win in the Champions League so we have broken a record.

"It is fantastic but there is a lot of football to be played in the group.

"We have two home games and Benfica and Barcelona away so it is still an open group for second place as far as I am concerned.

"We are still novices in this tournament but a few more performances like that wouldn't do us any harm at all.

"Every one of the players was a credit to the club."

Puyol hat sich gestern wieder verletzt. Pique ist ja auch immer noch out. Wenn die zwei gegen uns ausfallen würden im nächsten Spiel dann wäre ich wahrlich nicht böse.

Es war gestern ein genialer Abend. Ich bin komplett ausgetickt beim 3-2. Es war super wie die Mannschaft zurückgekommen ist. WIr haben gegen eine spieltstarke Mannschaft gezeigt wie es geht und ich denke wir können nun auswärts gegen Barca mit breiter Brust rangehen, auch wenn ich denke dass Barca gewinnen wird. Aber Moskau muss noch zu uns am letzten Spieltag und da könnte es zu einem Endspiel kommen. Hoffe die spielen Unentschieden gegen Benfica.

PS: Hab seit langem mal wieder bei den Hunnen im Forum nachgeschaut. Die meinen wegen einer schlechten Abwehrleistung und wollen sich lustig machen weil so wenig Auswärtsfans da waren. Unter der WOche in Moskau mit Visum und Urlaub und teurem Flug

Egal, ob die ihre Titel verlieren oder auch nicht, von denen redet keine Sau mehr. Und das wird sicherlich für die nächsten 5-10 Jahre der Fall sein. Und das mit der Überzahl mag ja stimmen, aber Hooper war alleine auf dem Weg zum 2-2. Und das war ja auch ganz klar ein Feldverweis. Das beste allerdings, der wollte ja zuerst Hooper die gelbe Karte geben, so hatte ich den Eindruck. Entweder der Linienrichter oder 4. Offizielle hat den Schiri darauf aufmerksam gemacht, daß das ein klares Foulspiel war. Ich bin voller Stolz, was unsere Mannschaft angeht. Alle haben alles gegeben, auch ein Wilson, der beim 1-1 sehr schlecht ausgesehen hat. Ansonsten bin ich mit Wilson im Moment sehr zufrieden, der hat sich gewaltig gesteigert. Forster sah beim 1-2 auch nicht sonderlich gut aus, aber auch da wissen wir, was wir an dem haben. Super für mich gestern, Ambrose, Lustig, Hooper und Brooooooooonnnnnyyyyy. Respekt auch mal an unseren Trainer, der zwei Stürmer aufgestellt hat. So muss das sein, selbst Flagge zeigen, denn wir können sehr guten Fussball spielen. Wir haben nun 4 Punkte in dieser Gruppe, das heisst jetzt schon, daß wir beide ganz sicher am 5. Dezember unser Endspiel, entweder um Platz 2, ganz sicher aber um Platz 3 gegen Spartak haben werden.

Mit Busquets, der flog vom Platz fehlt ein weiterer guter Spieler. Nun ja, in Barca möchte ich, daß wir uns gut verkaufen. Allerdings sehe ich durchaus eine Chance, im CP einen Punkt zu holen. Barca hat dann vielleicht 9 Punkte, ist mit Sicherheit durch und schont so vielleicht den ein oder anderen Spieler.

Hab mir die Szene mit Hooper nochmals angeschaut, der Schiri hat zuerst weiterspielen lassen. Bis er dann die Information bekam, daĂź das eine Notbremse war.
