    your safety at celtic park

FOR the avoidance of doubt, Celtic Football Club today re-iterated and clarified its earlier message on standing at matches at Celtic Park.

It is vital that supporters understand this message is made solely on the grounds of safety - nothing else. It is not some ‘heavy-handed PLC message’ to attempt to discourage atmosphere or to negatively affect supporters. It is, in fact, the direct opposite.

After repeated calls for a change in behaviour, the matter has been taken out of the Club's hands and is one which is rightly being treated very seriously by Strathclyde Police on behalf of the Stadium Safety Team.

We cannot stress this enough. If it is not addressed then, categorically, there will be sanctions taken against the Club.

Celtic Park has and always will be about atmosphere. We are proud to have one of the world's finest sporting venues here. The manager, the team, everyone at the Club sincerely values the atmosphere generated at matches - it is something we want and something which has characterised the Club and its supporters for years.

We value recent attempts to improve atmosphere at the stadium and indeed have been closely involved with supporters in ensuring the success of these.

However, the safety of our supporters is our priority. Celtic Park is an all-seater stadium and is designed to accommodate supporters on this basis. The stadium has no crush barriers to accommodate standing at matches and crucially, the gradient of the stadium is such that it does not allow for standing to safely take place. These are recognised safety standards.

The Club and the police do not make these comments lightly and we make them only on the grounds of the safety and protection of our supporters.

We should ask ourselves this: What if a surge of people occurs? What if supporters fall? What if there are injuries, or even worse. We all, therefore, need to do all we can to avoid the potential of these situations occurring.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has also appealed for supporters’ assistance in this area and said: “The support we get at matches is fantastic. We value the atmosphere which is generated at matches and it is vital in driving on the team.

"However, of paramount concern is the safety of our supporters. I want our fans to have an exciting, enjoyable and hopefully successful day at Celtic Park - but ultimately, we need our fans to be safe and to get home safely.

"For many years at the stadium we have achieved both - a great atmosphere in a safe environment. I know we can continue to make this happen.

“This really is a serious matter and it is something we need to deal with. I ask all our supporters to listen closely to the requests of the Club and the police.

“I thank all our supporters for your assistance with this issue and, of course, for your ongoing support".

Neil Lennon has spoken out after Celtic reiterated their instruction for all supporters to remain seated at Parkhead.

Last week the club urged all supporters not to stand at matches, a warning effectively aimed at the 'ultras' section of the Hoops support known as the Green Brigade, who congregate in the Lisbon Lions stand and who provide most of the noise and colour at home games.

After the 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock, which was played out in front of 44,522 fans, Celtic repeated that standing cannot be tolerated.

Lennon said on the club's official website: "The support we get at matches is fantastic. We value the atmosphere which is generated at matches and it is vital in driving on the team.

"However, of paramount concern is the safety of our supporters.

"This really is a serious matter and it is something we need to deal with. I ask all our supporters to listen closely to the requests of the club and the police."

Lennon's comments followed a strongly-worded statement on the website.

The statement read: "It is vital that supporters understand this message is made solely on the grounds of safety - nothing else.

"We cannot stress this enough. If it is not addressed then, categorically, there will be sanctions taken against the club.

"The stadium has no crush barriers to accommodate standing at matches and crucially, the gradient of the stadium is such that it does not allow for standing to safely take place. These are recognised safety standards.

"The club and the police do not make these comments lightly and we make them only on the grounds of the safety and protection of our supporters.

"We should ask ourselves this: What if a surge of people occurs? What if supporters fall? What if there are injuries, or even worse?

"We all, therefore, need to do all we can to avoid the potential of these situations occurring."

Also nur noch singen und anfeuern im sitzen ? Kein Wunder ist die Stimmung teilweise in den Stadien zum kotzen. So muss man weitermachen, dann kommt bald keine Sau mehr ins Stadion.

The Scottish Premier League will take no action against Celtic after looking into reports of pro-IRA chants.

Having quizzed representatives from the police and the club, the SPL found that Celtic "took all reasonably practicable steps" to prevent the behaviour.

"It is not disputed that a small number of Celtic fans engaged in singing and chanting in support of the IRA," read a statement from the SPL.

"Such behaviour is unacceptable and unwelcome at SPL matches."

Police match commander Eddie Smith had reported the offensive singing following Celtic's home match against Hibernian on 29 October.

The SPL say their investigation included "meetings with the Head of Operations at Celtic FC; the Divisional Commander (Chief Superintendent), Strathclyde Police E Division; the Match Commander (Superintendent), Strathclyde Police on the day of the fixture and the Head of the Football Co-ordination Unit Scotland (Superintendent), Strathclyde Police."

Adding that: "Written statements were also received from the Safety Officer, Celtic FC and from the Steward Supervisor, Celtic FC responsible for the relevant section of Celtic Park."

The SPL also say that repeated condemnation of such behaviour from manager Neil Lennon and chief executive Peter Lawwell was taken into consideration.

The statement concluded: "The ongoing work amongst the club, supporters and police to ensure that any unacceptable conduct is eradicated from Celtic Park is noted and is welcomed."

On 8 December, there will be a Uefa hearing on a similar accusation surrounding Celtic's Europa League home game against Rennes on 3 November.

    Ich stells mal hier rein:

"Being a Celtic supporter is the only role that gives me any sense of communal identity, that gives me a feeling of being part of something bigger and more important than myself, that links me in any kind of deep emotional bond with other human beings. What are the alternatives? To be Scottish, or a Socialist, or an existentialist, or a nihilistic misanthrope, or an alienated atheist? Being a logical positivist is a source of some comfort, but only intellectually. In the final analysis being a Celtic supporter means that I am not and never will be totally alone, or beyond the understanding of similar beings."
